A DANCE duo will discuss whether women should be judged on the way they present themselves tomorrow night(2).

Pinch will present Asking For It at the Marine Theatre in Lyme Regis in a provocative and funny piece of dance theatre, taking to the stage in clinging, short dresses complemented by heavy make-up.

The duo, Hannah Kew and Isabelle Cressy, will look at how female sexuality is policed and promoted in conflicting ways - from the street to the bedroom, squeezed between shame and fetishisation. A recent Amnesty International survey found that more than a quarter of people believe women are at least partially responsible for their rape if they wear 'sexy' or revealing clothing, while one in three people believe that women who behave flirtatiously are at least partly responsible.

"The show is called Asking For It and is an attempt to explore that phrase and examine what it actually means" said Hannah.

"We have approached the piece as a discussion of what judgement is and where it comes from. We look at judgement of self and others and the social, cultural and even economic structures that support it and allow it to thrive.

"We're essentially trying to expose the many contradictions that face people today - especially younger people and primarily as women - when it comes to our pursuit of identity and our freedom of choice."

Performed with humour, Asking For It celebrates the ridiculous and desperate in equal measure. With openness and vulnerability, Pinch explore the complexity of the issues involved.

The performance takes place after a show scheduled in Bridport last month was cancelled.

Drawing from their own lives and sharing their connection as performers with the audience, the duo fill every show with life and possibility, capturing the paradoxes of using sex to gain empowerment.

The performance will take place at 8pm. For more information, please call 01297 442138.
