LAURA Cockett has been appointed as the new director of Bridport Arts Centre (BAC).

She joins BAC from Hope Street Limited in Liverpool where she is currently projects producer.

Hope Street Limited is a major arts organisation and part of the Arts Councils’ national portfolio, which has led on many projects in Liverpool and beyond.

Laura has headed up the On the Verge festival which is dedicated to developing new work and emerging artists. Among her other projects, Suitcase saw performances in 10 train stations across the country.

Laura has had a wide career in the performing arts, which included two summers acting on Britain’s only touring theatre ship. Many of her projects have involved working with community groups and young people.

Laura said: “It’s an exciting venue with an ambitious and varied cultural offer for the people of Bridport and beyond.

“I am looking forward to working with the team to further develop an inclusive artistic programme that connects with local people and ensures that the arts centre continues to offer people the highest quality cultural experiences.”

Laura follows in the steps of Polly Gifford, who left her post as director at the end of September to take up a post leading the cultural regeneration of Hastings.

Barry Bates, new chairman of trustees at BAC, said: “We are thrilled at this appointment. Polly did a fantastic job as director and the fine reputation of the Arts Centre reflects the high quality of what we offer at the Arts Centre. The trustees were determined to appoint a worthy successor.”

Laura will start on November 10.
