DORCHESTER Choral Society (DCS) is holding a concert at St Mary’s Church on Saturday November 1 at 7.30pm.
The concert will be a time for remembrance and starts with Bach's First Unaccompanied Cello Suite performed by the international cellist Thomas Carroll and is followed by Haydn's Te Deum.
Performing Sir Michael Tippett's A Child of Our Time, the choir will mark 100 years since the First World War began and the 70th anniversary of D-Day.
The work rejects revenge and asks for compassion as the way to reconciliation. Tippett was a pacifist and great admirer of Gandhi.
He wrote it as a response to Kristall Nacht in 1938 Germany when Nazi mobs killed many Jews and burnt their synagogues and shops.
Ostensibly to revenge the murder of a German diplomat, by an exiled Polish Jewish boy in Paris, but a pretext for speeding the annihilation of all Jews.
Having survived two World Wars, Europe has grown together and to celebrate this continuing peace DCS will be joined by choirs from Germany and France.
In October members of DCS will have sung the same work in Dorchester’s twin town Lubbecke along with members of Bayeux's Orpheon Choir.
Tickets cost £15 for seats reserved in the centre aisle and £12 for seats in the unreserved side aisles.
They are available from October 11 from Harmony Music 3-4 Forum Centre, Trinity Street, Dorchester.
They are also available from choir members and from the DCS Box Office,1 Pitcote Lane, Poundbury, Dorchester DT1 3GH.
