LYME Folk Weekend promises a full-on finale at the end of the month with a maverick musical mash up from riotous folk troubadours Demon Barbers XL.

The weekend takes place from August 29 to 31 and features some of the folk scene’s biggest names performing at the Marine Theatre and at the Pilot Boat pub in Lyme Regis.

Demon Barbers XL will be bringing their unique folk-hip hop extravaganza to town for the first time.

Their no-holds-barred performance will combine traditional folk music and dance with body popping, break dancing and acrobatics.

As one of the best live acts on the folk circuit they’ll present their award-winning road show with characteristic northern chutzpah marrying the traditions of fiddle and accordion with electric bass guitar, drums and synthesizer.

Such is their reputation as live performers; the BBC tipped them as one of the must-see acts at this year’s Glastonbury festival, where they rocked open-mouthed crowds with their musical gymnastics.

Frontman Damien Barber said: “On stage there’s a lot going on and audiences are never quite sure what to expect.

“We started out as a five-piece band, plus Morris, clog and sword dancers, but we’ve now added hip-hop dancers and a scratch DJ to the mix.”

Julie Sheppard, the festival’s publicist, said “The best way to describe Demon Barbers?

“Morris dancing meets MC Hammer? They’ve taken the best traditions of English folk music and dance but given it a hip hop twist.

“It shouldn’t really work, but it really does. It’s fast, furious and fun.”

She said: “If I was to recommend one show to catch over the entire weekend, then it would be this one.

“Whether you’re eight or 80, it will raise your eyebrows and it might even blow your mind. It’ll be a spectacular finale to this year’s folk festival.”

Demon Barbers are performing at 5pm in the Marine Theatre on Sunday August 31.
