A TEEN folk trio who have attracted national plaudits are bringing their sound to Weymouth next month.

Granny’s Attic will be performing at St Edmund’s Church Hall on Saturday, August 23, fresh from their success as nominees for the Young Folk Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Even though they have rubbed shoulders with folk stars at the Royal Albert Hall, the Worcestershire teenagers still love to busk on the streets.

They go back a long way – George Sansome, Lewis Wood and Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne met at secondary school.

The trio soon began playing at school concerts and local events.

George, 18, said: “I’m not sure how quickly it happened. We were together for two or three years before we started gigging.

“It escalated and we started doing more and more gigs.

“A good friend of ours said: ‘Go for the Young Folk Awards’. It was a complete surprise that we got as far as we did – we weren’t expecting to be nominated at all.”

Granny’s Attic lost out to The Mischa Macpherson Trio at the awards, which saw Bella Hardy emerge as Folk Singer of the Year and Aidan O’Rourke named as Musician of the Year. Cohen, 18, said: “It was an incredible evening. We got to meet some of our contemporaries and some of our heroes.”

Both Cohen and Lewis have strong links to Dorset, with Cohen having grandparents living in Charmouth and Lewis’s grandparents living in Bridport.

Lewis, 19, said: “The past few years we’ve been down in Bridport busking in Bucky Doo Square.

“This is the first time we’ve had a few proper gigs but we’re still looking forward to coming down to Dorset and having a change of scenery.”

Support in the band members’ home county of Worcestershire is strong, Lewis said.

“We’ve got a few local followers on the local session scene.

“We did a concert at our old school recently and it was so nice to go back.”

The trio have many folk influences. For Cohen it’s Peter Bellamy, for George it’s Nic Jones and for Lewis it’s Dave Swarbrick.
