IF you’re one of the many hundreds of people in Dorset who now leads a vegan lifestyle, there’s some good news.

Now you can have your cake and eat it, thanks to cooks like Jo Tyszczuk.

The 35-year-old Bournemouth mum launched Vegan Heart Cakes exactly a year ago and her wares have been selling like, well, hot cakes, (although some of hers aren’t baked and are made from raw ingredients) ever since.

“I am passionate about my food, and I put all my heart into everything I make which is why I call them Vegan Heart Cakes. Everything is prepared fresh and with love. There are no nasty additives, they are mainly organic, gluten free, sugar and soya free, powered by superfoods.”

Latest research shows that more than one in ten people in the UK now claim to follow a vegan or vegetarian diet and several celebrities such as Beyoncé and Russell Brand have also decided to ditch all animal products.

But can a vegan cake really taste as good? Fans of Vegan Heart Cakes certainly think so. They can often be seen queueing outside the door at Jo’s monthly pop up stall at Sunrise Organics in Bournemouth.

“Veganism is definitely becoming more popular” says Jo, “I think people are more conscious of what they eat now. I was a vegetarian on and off for years, but when my son was born two and a half years ago, I started to think about my lifestyle and the type of legacy I want to leave. I wanted to be healthier and to show I care about how animals are treated.”

Jo also supplies several cafés in the area, she said: “I’ve always enjoyed making cakes, but they used to be a bit of a guilty pleasure until I found a way of making vegan cakes.”
