ONE Bridport entrepreneur is looking to put the surprise back into dining with his secret supper clubs.

BearKat Supper Club is the brain child of 28-year-old Bridport chef Dominic Brown. The aim of the nights is to provide great locally sourced food in unique locations. With a host of hand-picked local bands and musicians performing and cocktails served by guest mixologists, including Lloyd Brown of local company Gray Bear.

Dominic started the evenings last year and went full time with the project in January.

People buy their tickets for a specific event and then on the day they are sent an email with the exact location and directions - leaving an air of mystery about the event right up to the night.

Dominic trained at Weymouth College, before working with Mark Hix in Lyme Regis and the Phoenix Bakery in Weymouth, before working for two-and-a-half years as the chef at Bridport’s Soulshine Cafe.

Dominic said: “I worked at lots of different places to pick up different knowledge from different areas. I wanted to learn everything.”

He said he loves ‘food, drink, coffee and music’ and currently he does everything for himself, from the cooking, to picking the bands, to organising the venues and promotions. He works closely with local producers and farmers to get local, organic, in season produce for the unique three-course menus for each event. Dominic said the nights were very relaxed. He said: “The idea is that all the venues are in unique spaces- somewhere you wouldn’t go for dinner.

“The first one I did was in the Lyric Theatre in Bridport. It’s a vintage theatre, so I did a 20s themed dinner party in there.”

He also books all the bands, adding: “I’m trying to use up-and-coming artists that are either starting up or doing something that a bit unknown.”

He explained: “You buy a ticket and on the day I send out an email telling you where it is and how to get there. You get a cocktail on arrival and canapes and there’s a live band playing. It’s quite relaxed.”

Dominic is hoping to hold one secret supper a month and then in the summer do two a month. The next event is called ‘Wings of a Dove’.

Dominic said: “I want it to be relaxed and everyone to have a really good time.”
