WINTER white wines will brighten up long, dark nights - and go perfectly with this season's seafood. Here we round up some of the best the season has to offer.

With a chill in the air, November may entertain thoughts of a warming red, but it's also one of the best months to net a bright white to complement your catch of the day.

A great month for fresh seafood, our fishmongers' stalls are laden with mussels, oysters, prawns and plaice, and with lobster and scallops on the menu too, there's oceans of choice depending on your budget.

Here are six to try:

1. Cabalie Blanc 2014, Vin de France (£7.99, www.laithwaites.co.uk)

Heady and aromatic, viognier is becoming increasingly fashionable, and this full-bodied white from the South of France pairs beautifully with flaky white fish such as hake, monkfish or crab. A fragrant blend of 75% viognier with 20% colombard and muscat, there's a touch of orange blossom and honeysuckle to the classic peach fruit, with well-balanced acidity on the fresh, citrusy finish.

2. Gomez Crusado Blanco 2014, Rioja, Spain (£12.99, www.laithwaites.co.uk)

A natural bedfellow with paella, this lightly oaked Rioja offers a delicious richness that can cope with the weight of the rice, saffron and shellfish. With a lovely creamy texture and toasty vanilla notes riding on the appealing pineapple, lime and apple flavours, there's a subtle nuttiness on the finish and enough depth to be interesting.

3. Simonnet Febvre - Chablis 2014, France (£14.95, www.winedirect.co.uk)

The flinty, mineral fruit in a Chablis from Burgundy makes it a natural choice with delicate seafood such as Dover sole, scallops or oysters and this elegant chardonnay offers floral and mineral aromas, great purity on the palate with concentrated white fruit flavours and a streak of minerality on the long, citrusy finish.

4. Montes Alpha Chardonnay 2013, Casablanca Valley, Chile (£12.49, Majestic)

Round and expressive, this New World chardonnay is 'a different kettle of fish' with its broad flavours of bananas, peaches, apricot, pineapple and pear drops, with good oak balance (it spends 10 months in oak) and fresh structure. A buttery, tropical nose, lively palate and good acidity make it a winner with a creamy fish pie.

5. Nautilus Sauvignon Blanc 2014, Marlborough, New Zealand (£15, www.dulwichvintners.co.uk)

If you love the green, grassy aromas of a fresh and zippy sauvignon blanc with notes of lemon and lime and a mouth-watering freshness with passion fruit flavours, hints of gooseberry, hay and nettle, this is the white for you. With an energetic finish and a little prickle on the tail, enjoy with mussels, oysters and prawns.

6. Tyrrell's Winemakers Selection VAT 1 Semillon 2009, Hunter Valley, Australia (£36.75, www.vintagemarque.com)

A world-class wine that's won countless medals, the Hunter Valley is famous for its semillon and this dry white displays pure ripe citrusy fruits with notes of lemon groves, some melony richness and a clean, crisp structure with marked acidity on the finish. If you have a special occasion coming up, it would be tempting to shell out for lobster and relish the two together.
