A PORTLAND pub will be celebrating its cask ales which have gained it recognition from an independent body.

The New Inn recently received the Cask Marque Award with top marks from the Cask Marque Trust.

Owner Spencer Cullum, who took over The New Inn in 2006 with his wife Stacey, decided it was time for the staff to celebrate and have invited residents to sample and learn more about the products they offer.

The New Inn offers guests the choice of a pub that provides local ales, a restaurant that serves locally sourced food and boutique rooms for those who wish to explore the island.

The establishment was once featured on an episode on Channel 4's 'Four in a Bed'.

Its ales received 100 per cent in the assessment from an independent assessor who checks all cask ales on sale for factors such as temperature, appearance, aroma and taste.

All the beers must reach the required standard for the pub to pass.

The pub has been provided with a plaque, framed certificate and merchandising material to inform its customers of the award and their rights.

To pay tribute to this milestone for the business, The New Inn is holding a Meet the Brewers Garden Party.

Brewers who supply the New Inn with their quality ales will be on hand to explain brewing techniques and show off their handcrafted, local products to guests.

Brewers attending the event will include Gyle 59, Cerne Abbas Brewery, Dorset Brewing Company, West Milton Cider and the award winning Dorset Conker Gin.

Sam Stanley, lead supervisor said: "The pub has changed quite a lot in the last two years. We have become quite a successful restaurant that supplies sea food so the way forward was to improve the beer and it’s become quite apparent that real ale has become very popular.

“To pride ourselves on an award gives the public confidence that they’re going to have a good pint.

“It’s a well recognised award so when people see that they know it’s [the ale] is going to be good. It’s quite an achievement.

“They’re good suppliers and they supply us with a very good product so we want to supply that to everyone else.”

You can meet the brewers yourself and learn more about their products at The New Inn on Thursday July 2 from 7pm.
