Buyers from the Far East triumph at S&S auction

Symonds & Sampson’s auction on 30 May at the Digby Hall, Sherborne, proved to be a fascinating day with properties for sale in Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire and Hampshire.

Auctioneer Mark Lewis said that the run up to the auction has been quite tricky with the Easter holiday and two Bank Holidays during the campaign but buyers remained focussed and paid well for all of the lots.

Some garages in Castle Cary, in a dilapidated state, sold for £26,000 whilst land at Sandford Orcas, near Sherborne; North Cheriton, near Wincanton; Merley and Gussage All Saints, near Wimborne and Bay Road in Gillingham all sold well with the top price at £14,000 per acre for amenity land and £9,000 per acre for agricultural land.

A wonderful Old Rectory at Winterborne Houghton was the highest priced lot on the day.  This was a stunning house on the market for the first time in nearly 50 years and stood close to the church.  The house had some outbuildings and sold for £850,000.

A cottage in the middle of Crewkerne sold for £110,000 while a bungalow at Ludlow Close in Warminster sold for £170,000.  The buyer of Ludlow Close had only seen the property the day before at 6.00pm and before buying at auction the next day. They had come all the way from the Far East … Kent.

Our final lot was in North Road, Sherborne, a detached 1930s house in fair condition but it had quite a strange anomaly.  One of the previous owners had sold a garage at the back of the property to a neighbour giving that person a right of way over the driveway.  We had a lot of interest and good bidding on the day and the hammer fell at £349,000.

Symonds & Sampson’s next auction is on 27 June and we are now welcoming entries for July and September.
