Lidl effect 'could hit market'

THE damaging affect a cut-price Lidl's would have on Bridport's twice-weekly street market has not been properly assessed, Mayor Martin Ray claimed this week.

He told the plans committee that the German-based company's proposed new store off St Andrew's Road would attract the same type of "price sensitive" customers.

"The people who go to Lidl are the people who usually use the market because they are going for the cheaper product," he said.

But this important concern had not been taken account of in the company's town centre "impact assessment", he claimed, and as a result the council had failed to add it to its long list of official objections.

Coun Ray told The News: "The district council's consultants now say that it looks as if Lidl have not considered the impact their coming here would have on the market.

"If that is so then they have not really been looking at Bridport at all because the market is a major part of the town.

"As a town council it is part of our duty to protect our market traders especially as everyone who pays council tax in Bridport is subsidised by the market traders' rents."

"It is a point for us to make when Lidl resubmit their planning application."

The committee heard that Lidl has now submitted revised plans for the site layout, taking into account highway authority requirements.

But the changes failed to impress objectors.

Town Clerk Bob Gillis said it was a very technical amendment and the town council's "strong objections" on highways grounds still stood.

And Simon Williams, chairman of the St Andrew's Road Residents Association, put forward figures highlighting their concerns over high traffic volumes along the road.

Although Lidl had now agreed to provide a pedestrian refuge near the Travis Perkins entrance, which was an improvement, traffic movements along St Andrew's Road were predicted to exceed acceptable limits at peak school times. The needs of residents and children should be respected, he said.

Mr Williams said the amendments had failed to provide for a pedestrian refuge outside Lidl itself and no moves had been made to provide a central turning lane.

The revised plans also failed to address the loss of an important public view which would be blocked by the new Travis Perkins building on the site.

People had the right to the view and this was "an obscenity of an obstruction", he said.

** The town council has already lodged a long list of objections to Lidl's bid to come to Bridport.

They fear the cut-price supermarket would put many small traders out of business - robbing Bridport of its "viability and vitality" and turning the centre into a ghost town.

Lidl has applied to build its store next to builders' merchants Travis Perkins in St Andrew's Road.

The new supermarket will offer cut-price groceries and create some 35 jobs.

As part of a joint application, Travis Perkins would replace its headquarters with up to date buildings, financed by the money it gets from Lidl, adding some five extra jobs to its current 25-strong workforce.

Planners have also received a petition opposing the Lidl plan, signed by 557, from the St Andrew's Road Residents' Association.

What a patronising attitude this gentleman adopts. Many people use the market for the quality of the items on offer, particularly foodstuffs. He may not have noticed but these are all of a higher price and, of course, a higher quality than the offerings in the local supermarkets. You want cheap? Well there's clothing, of a sort, computers bits-and-pieces and books, none of which will be sold by Lidl. Many townspeople really need the low prices and good quality that Lidl offers its shoppers. Why would this figure of fun deny the voters of Bridport what so many of them desperately need? What the electorate in the West Dorset Council elections did so can the voters for Bridport Town Council. He would do well to remember that or it could be "thank you and good night, Mr Mayor".

Regarding the front-page article in the Bridport News last week – ‘The Lidl effect’.

It is quite clear from the tone of the article that the Mayor, Mr Ray, does not have the best interests of the majority of the citizens of this town at heart.

His concern is for the market and its traders – very commendable, but surely he should be more concerned about the welfare of the citizens of this town, many of whom are now being financially squeezed as never before. The arrival of Lidl should have a beneficial effect on the local economy, provide new jobs and assist hard-pressed families.

In my (voluntary) job, I meet many people who are facing debt, the threat of redundancy or just finding it hard to make ends meet. These people welcome the arrival of Lidl, if only to provoke retail competition and to lower prices.

Of course, this is subject to the traffic situation being resolved. In fact, if the arrival of Lidl results in an improvement to the current St. Andrews Road/Sea Road traffic mess, many more will benefit.

Bridport deserves better, we should welcome and encourage new businesses to our town.

You really do not understand - we have a thriving daily market at home plus another thriving german supermarket (Aldi) - each has their own specialist items and in fact the german supermarket is of a much better quality in most cases! The last time I visited Bridport Market there was hardly anything there - a few stalls with plants and fruit and vegetables. Where is the local Farmers Market if you want locally sourced goods - not in Bridport High Street I know. A company brings jobs and more choice to the area and all you can do is petition and object? Come on people of Bridport, come to your senses!

Martin Ray. As Bridport Town Major and therefore a Leading Citizen OR could this be misleading, surely you should be representing the majority of your townsfolk NOT just those who visit the town twice a week with their Market stalls, make some money and return the following week.
There seems to be a very much N.I.M.B.Y. attitude to this Lidl affair. What on earth is wrong with a bit of competition.
I expect the same applied when Morrisons moved here, "Oh, don't want that, will affect all of our local shops"
Well Mr Ray... has it, no I do not think so.
I do not think Lidl's will affect the market, who are really only here during the Summer months, come the Autumn and Winter we very rarely have a decent enough sized Market, do we.
Bridport is a poor area for decent jobs and what jobs there are DO NOT PAY MUCH, so really Mr Ray we should really be trying to help get this store here in Bridport NOT oppose it. The people who put you in your position of Mayor (via the local elections) would appreciate this.
The road problems appear to me to be fairly minor, can and should be sorted, like it was done for the Co-op.
In fairness, to help with the current problems at St Andrews Rd/Sea Rd I think the entrance to Co-op should be moved to be opposite the 'T' junction and a round-a-bout installed. This particular problem is LONG OVERDUE being sorted.
Yes, for your information I live along the South side of St Andrews and have to put up with this junction on a daily basis.
PROBLEM.... waiting to pull out to turn right, road is busy, so have to wait. Sead Rd becomes clear BUT still have to wait as another person is trying to turn across you from the 'centre turn right' position OR someone turns into Sea Rd from the co-op entrance. This could and should easily be sorted.
One other thing. The current Travis Perkins site IS an eyesore, at least with them having new buildings AND Lidl's would tidy it up.

Mr Martin Ray, put the majority of this towns residents first, NOT the minority OR your own personal views, which I believe should be impartial.

Lidl will bring MORE trade into Bridport. Good value for money food and goods. I certainly will go through to Bridport and look at the market before shopping at Lidl. COMPETITION is GOOD for the customers so get on with it.

So the mayor of Bridport stands for fewer jobs and higher prices. I'll remember that - I expect a few more will as well.
