Starlet Amy on course to net success

| Game, set, match: Youngster Amy Nicholson continues to shine on the tennis court |
FLEDGLING tennis star Amy Nicholson has had another successful outing and continues to shine on court.
Competing in the under-12s for Taunton Tennis Club against Wells at Somerton, the Beaminster-based youngster disposed of her highly ranked opponent Iona Innis with consummate ease, failing to concede a game in a comprehensive 6/0, 6/0 victory.
This National Club League singles success preceded an almost equally conclusive triumph in the doubles, which rounded off a superb competition both individually and collectively.
Amy, 11, has received glowing reports from the sport's luminaries, including the
LTA's head of tennis Carl Maes, who believes that should she get the right coaching, she may become national and even international class.
Results this term have certainly been impressive - Amy has consistently beaten opponents ranked more highly than her - which has helped her grading, currently at 8.1, to fall rapidly.
This ranking process works similarly to golf's handicap system; whereby a lower number represents a higher standard.
The St Mary's School pupil, who is a member of the South West Academy, based in Taunton, has several tournaments ahead of her in a condensed summer schedule.
The prestigious NatWest Dorset Open, which will take place in Bournemouth in a couple of months' time is the showpiece event, but other ranking events are of paramount importance for Amy to further improve her ranking.
Her father, Andy, is convinced that she can kick-on this summer and display her abundant potential to a higher degree.
There are a lot of tournaments for her and if she carries on the way she's going then she'll become a very good player,'' he said.
You never know what's going to happen but I'm hoping that she can perform in the Dorset Open and if she plays well she can win it.
She won the under-10s version two years ago and lost in the quarter-finals last year.''
