CHARITIES are urged to apply for the latest round of grants from the Gannett Foundation UK.

The Gannett Foundation is the charitable arm of Gannett Co Inc, owner of Newsquest Media Group, which publishes the Bridport and Lyme Regis News and various other local newspapers, websites and magazines across the UK.

The Foundation is particularly looking to support schemes and organisations which bring lasting benefits to communities and showcase clear planning.

Initiatives that assist with neighbourhood improvement, economic development, youth development, education, care for the disabled or elderly and environmental conservation are highly valued.

This year, applications that reflect the special theme of charities that support people living in rural communities are particularly encouraged, although applications that do not fit into this theme will still be considered.

The majority of grants are for relatively modest sums of money, but applications for grants towards projects on a larger scale are welcome and will be considered by the Foundation.

Diarmuid MacDonagh, editor of the Bridport and Lyme Regis News, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for charities to apply for a grant towards their ongoing good works and I would encourage local good causes to make the most of this opportunity.

“We value projects that bring lasting benefits to communities served by our local newspapers and websites.”

Applicants MUST be registered charities and must not have received a Gannett Foundation grant in the last two years

Applications for this year’s grants MUST be sent in an electronic format to the News' sister paper the Dorset Echo at newsdesk@dorsetecho.co.uk

The completed application form, http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/resources/files/37195, must be provided alongside relevant supporting materials and most recent accounts. The deadline for applications is 5pm on October 14.

Over the course of the last 10 years, the Gannett Foundation has issued grants to the value of nearly £4 million to British charities.

Local charities including Weymouth Rowing Club and Routes young people’s charity have received grants in previous years.

The Friends of MV Freedom group also received £1,290 to assist in the purchase of new communications equipment.
