ORGAINSERS of this year's Lyme Regis Lifeboat Week hope to have raised more than £15,000 for the RNLI - despite two of the main events being called off because of the weather.

The Red Arrows were due to perform last Monday, but thick fog forced the display to be postponed. Last year, around 40,000 flocked to the resort to catch a glimpse of the famous RAF jets.

On Friday, the RAF Falcons parachutists were also forced to cancel their performance because of the wet and windy conditions.

Chairman of the organisers, the Lyme Regis and Charmouth RNLI Guild, Irene Roper, said: "Everyone put a brave face on despite the bad weather and of course, we were sad the Red Arrows and the Falcons couldn't come.

"But we still had plenty of events for people to enjoy - and as usual, people were extremely generous with their donations to our life-saving charity."

The opening day of the event, which included the popular bathtub race enjoyed hot and sunny conditions. Dorset Fire and Rescue Service took first place - fighting off competition from seven teams.

The sun shone again on Saturday for the final day of events - including the swimming challenges for children and adults, which attracted almost 100 entries. Belly dancing and outdoor music was also on offer last weekend - bringing the special week of events to a sunny conclusion.

And an estimated crowd of 150 turned out in heavy rain, just right for the duck race on the River Lym on Friday.

Irene also paid tribute to the team of RNLI volunteers who helped ensure the event was a success - and has appealed for new committee members to come forward.

"Also, as usual, we had a great team of volunteers helping with collections and running events," added Irene.

"However, we still need at least six new committee members to help us during the year."
