POLICE officers spent nearly three hours negotiating with a Bridport woman on the clifftops at West Bay after becoming concerned for her welfare.

Several police vehicles attended the incident this afternoon, along with the coastguard.

Inspector Mike Darby of Bridport Police said: "We received a call at around 12.30pm to a woman in her 40s who was standing on the clifftops on East Cliff.

"Police attended and located her at 12.50pm, and we had concerns about her welfare.

"We spoke to her at length with negotiators to ensure her safety until 3.30pm, when officers escorted her to Bridport police station."

He added: "Coastguard officers also attended the scene due to the cliff location.

"The woman is currently being treated to ensure that she is safe and well."
