A flood alert has been issued for West Dorset following heavy rainfall. 

Further rainfall throughout the day could lead to river levels rising across the county with flooding expected on low lying land.

The Environment Agency has said river levels are forecast to rise on the River Lim, River Char, River Winniford, Simene River, River Brit, River Asker, River Mangerton and River Bride. 

Flooding is also forecast to affect locations near the Upper Dorset Frome, Hooke River, with low lying land expected to be most affected, particularly around Dorchester Road and Frome Lane area of Maiden Newton.

It is also possible at tributaries between Toller Whelme and Dorchester and between Dorchester and Wareham. 

River levels are also forecast to rise on the River Wey, Preston Brook, River Jordan due to heavy rainfall.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: "We are monitoring rainfall and river levels and are checking rivers for blockages in the area.

"We will continue to monitor the forecast and re-issue this alert/warning if necessary.

"Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water."
